Terry Teachout questions the relevance and reliability of arts awards and prizes:
Of the giving of prizes there is no end, and it’s hard to think of a single one, however ostensibly prestigious, that hasn’t been devalued by the promiscuity and/or lack of discrimination with which it is handed out.I agree completely, and extend my agreement to journalism competitions, which I refuse to enter despite the annual entreaties of some of my editors. Rather than pontificate further, I’ll direct you straight to Terry’s remarks.
