Opening Minds through the Arts works to teach reading, writing, math and science to kindergarten through 8th grade students. SKATEBOARDING IN TUCSON – SANTA RITA SKATE PARK BRINGS SKATING TO DOWNTOWN NEIGHBORHOOD.

From the desk of Luis Carrión on Monday, June 8th 2009 at 15:25

Skateboarders can be a difficult group to appreciate if you’ve never skated. Seen from a distance, a band of kids in skinny-leg pants, beanies, and black hoodies does not seem to inspire confidence among visitors to the struggling downtown urban environments. They argue that skating is a demanding sport that requires perseverance, skill, and talent and they say that all they want is to be able to practice without fear of being harassed by The Man. Now Tucson Parks and Rec has completed the latest safe-haven for skaters, and it seems that the project has been met with positive reactions.

The Tucson Citizen went to an online-only version this week, and now the Arizona Daily Star is the only daily to cover Southern Arizona. For the Journalists at the Star this means that their work is that much more important to the community, and a recent visit by our production crew found the newsroom to be busy with the job of covering the news.
