Tucson's photo-radar enforcement vans have been grounded indefinitely following the murder of one of the van's operators in Phoenix. Police say 51-year-old Doug Georgianni was shot to death Sunday while he was deployed in Phoenix. 68-year-old Thomas DeStories has been arrested in connection with the case.
In addition to Tucson's reaction to ground its vans, the Scottsdale Police Department and its contractor, American Traffic Solutions, also has suspended all mobile enforcement vehicles from service while the homicide investigation is underway. Mobile photo radar operations have also been suspended in Mesa, Phoenix and Avondale. Police say violence aimed at the controversial radar operations is becoming more common. Several motorists have been arrested for taking their anger out on the vans and their operators.
Yes, I know I’ve been an inconstant blogger recently. I’ve been busy cranking out articles, mainly for Strings magazine, but also for the Tucson Weekly. Here’s the beginning of my latest contribution to the local alternative rag:
Genius is the subject of two plays that opened downtown last weekend. It's musical genius at work in Arizona Theatre Company's _Beethoven, as I Knew Him_, whereas mathematical virtuosity lies behind Beowulf Alley Theatre Company's _Proof_. But in each case, human failings and aspirations are what really drive the stories.
Now that we have the Marketplace Whiteboards online (left side of KUAZ page), it's time to take a look back. I first blogged about this back in December, so let's take a look back, as we begin to look forward.
Let's get the comments rolling. What do you think?
We'll have more of these so-called "widgets" online soon from other shows.
My theater review in the latest Tucson Weekly begins with an excuse:
Because our page count is tight, I often have to cram two reviews into the space of one. Usually, that's not a problem, but this week, we have very strange bedfellows snuggled up together: a family-friendly romp at the Gaslight Theatre, and a strictly adult drama at Live Theatre Workshop.
I'll start with the family fare, and then you children can go do something safe, like play in the street, while I have a few words with the grown-ups about the other show.
Each is good in its own way, as you’ll learn here.
